The boxes below will provide a short overview of the various Google Advanced Search techniques
The standard Google interface is below. Note that once you've grown accustomed to basics of advanced search, you can use what you've learned to enhance the basic search process as well.
Searching for an exact phrase when looking for a proper name or specific concept. You can also search via the main search bar by putting the phrase in "quotation marks". Be sure that you are really looking for an exact phrase or else the results will be too limited.
Can also limit to websites that end in .edu or .gov to get better vetted results.
Can also filter by usage rights to help find open access resources that you can resuse with proper attribution. Please reach out to the Library for more help with usage rights.
To access Google Advanced Searching, go to the settings icon on the lower right hand corner, and click on advanced searching. Alternatively, you can go to the following link: https://www.google.com/advanced_search
Use site or domain searching when you need to search a specific website. This can sometimes be more helpful that the site's own search feature, some sites don't have a search feature, and many sites just use an internal google advanced search link themselves. Either enter the webpage in to the "Domain or Site" search field, or use the shortcut "site:" on the main search page.
